ADD/ADHD ApplesauceRecipe

Just in case you do wind up going on an elimination diet for food allergens and/or yeast, for whatever reason, including ADD/ADHD, this is a wonderful recipe from Dr. Crooks cookbook, THE YEAST CONNECTION COOKBOOK which you can buy at http://www.yeastconnection.com/ It also completely eliminates high fructose corn syrup. I am showing you how easy it is to cook standbys you rely on, without any additives.

REAL APPLESAUCE

1 apple per person, any kind except red delicious

1/4 cup apple juice or fresh-pressed cider OR pureed ripe pears per person for the first four servings (add 2 tablespoons for each serving beyond that)

Dash of cinnamon, optional

Peel, core and dice the apples into a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 15-30 minutes until the apples soften. Stir in cinnamon if you wish. Serve warm.

ADD/ADHD Yeast

If you, or your child has ADD/ADHD symptoms as well as occasional vaginal, or rectal itching, you might want to consider a systemic yeast infection as a part of the problem.
Another way to determine a systemic yeast infection is like this picture shows. Spit into a glass of chlorine free water, and let the water sit to see if stringy things with legs grow after a few days. These strings are yeast from a yeast overgrowth in your mouth (thrush).
If you suspect ADD/ADHD symptoms could be caused by yeast, you really need a holistic health care provider, not traditional medicine/traditional talk therapy. Tradional western medicine usually has no idea of the connection.

Although.... I did see Dr. Phil do a show on ADD, and when he heard one ADD symptom child had had multiple rounds of antibiotics prior to the behavior change, he said, "I think your problem is fungal" meaning yeast, and referred the mother and child to a specialist he knew.
How does yeast in the gut (mouth to rectum) infect a brain? Simple: leaky gut syndrome. Check my blog for leaky gut syndrome.
If you walk into any good, well rounded health food store (versus nutrition for bodybuilders primarily), you are going to find a lot of ways to kill yeast and resupply the gut with flora lost through antibiotics. Ask them for what sells the most, and what people seem to have the best luck with.

For me, by far, the best yeast killing machine I have used is olive leaf extract. I use tablets, not liquid. I take two tablets, twice a day. I think most children are told by their holistic health care provider to take one tablet, twice a day. Find a good holistic health care provider and do exactly what they tell you to do. There are now a whole line of digestive enzymes made specifically to target yeast. Some people even chew up plain papaya tablets before going to bed at night, after brushing teeth, to eliminate the yeast in their mouths (thrush.)
There are prescriptions for an oral antifungal medications. For some people these work, but for some, like me, they don't work at all. If you are using a holistic medical doctor this is easy because he or she can write the presciption and reccomend all kinds of natural herbal stuff as well. If your medical doctor isn't holistic, you can still get a prescription and give it a try.

As well, it is always a good idea to check out Dr. William Crook's book, THE YEAST CONNECTION http://www.yeastconnection.com/

He, and every holistic health care provider, will tell you to take the person infected with systemic yeast, off of simple carbohydrates during the detox stage and slowly reintroduce these items into the diet one the gut flora has been re-established (yeast dead, probiotics resupplied.) Simple carbohydrates include sugar, honey, white flour and bread, etc. but don't worry, Dr. Crook even has a cookbook to help you. And relax, this diet phase won't last forever. And if yeast is the causative agent of the ADD/ADHD, the results can be truly remarkable.

Good Luck!

ADD/ADHD Dr. Janice Poole and son William

At the time of this interview for my book, William was 20. From a previous blog, you might remember that Dr. Janice Poole is person who introduced me to Dr. Amens' book, HEALING ADD.

This is a quote from her interview: "The huge precipice for intervention with William, that struck me over and over again, was Dr. Amen's phase 'the goal is not to be off medication, the goal is to be funcitonal'. And he said that over and over in the book. I appreciate him driving that home. I have a little bit of an aversion to pharmacy (she is a chiropractor). But I love my child. And I want everybody, including my child, to have whatever is available to make them functional. And if pharmacy is what it takes, then you thank God for it."

William responded well to a low dose, time release Adderal. Dr. Poole, "We tried straterra. And he had all the side effects with it that you might have with it. We were off of it in two weeks. shortness of breathe, heart pounding, nausea, the whole thing. So we didn't last long on that."

"William had two acupuncture treatments. He didn't try Chinese herbs. he just wasn't ready for that process, and it is a process."

Many of us have to try many different things that work for our health, including ADD. That is why I formed this blog. Find what works best for you. Keep looking, keep trying. Do not give up!

Dr. Amen doesn't cover acupuncture, Chinese herbs or Elisa food allergy tests...something I will cover later. What he does cover are so many other ways to be functional with ADD/ADHD, from pharmaceuticals to supplements, to herbs, to diet, to exercise, to meditation and biofeedback, to brain scans! If you, or someone you love, has ADD or ADHD, you will find this book invaluable. We did! http://www.brainplace.com/

ADD/ADHD Denise

Denise is a remarkable woman who did exactly what I talked about in my last email: she figured out on her own that exercise, and for her, music, can control her mental state. She agreed to an interview for my book, and here are a few excerpts you can use now.

"Yes, running helps me to get grounded and focused for the day--that's why I like to do it in the morning. It also helps me and is my medicine for my anxiety and mild mania/bipolar and depression. I am not diagnosed bi-polar personality, but a lot of my family are so I know what symptoms I recognize in myself. I have what I call mild mania which can get pretty bad if I do not run regularly, as does my anxiety."

...."My music is also therapeutic for me. When the running isn't enough, if I can get deeply engrossed in my music, it cures my depression, mania and/or anxiety."

..."I have read about, and have felt the actual chemical balance come back into my mental state after running and from working on my music. "

ADD/ADHD 2

In my last blog, I told you that Healing ADD covers many different aspects of ADD and is invaluable if you or someone you know has ADD.

Today I will be covering a couple of different aspects of ADD/ADHD Dr. Amen talks about in his book. One is exercise, and the other is food. For a week only, keep a daily journal of everything you or your ADD person puts into their mouth. Pay particular attention to the protein to carbohydrate ratio. Also, record the amount of exercise done, type and length. Did it get the blood flowing? How was the behavior/attitude afterwards? On page 25, Dr. Amen says "Exercise boosts blood flow to the brain. Unfortunately, children and teens get much less exercise than they did 20 years ago." On page 25, "Most ADD children and adults simply do better on a high-protein, low-simple-carbohydrate diet."...."A lack of protein causes a tremendous problem with focus throughout the day"

If you haven't gotten the book yet, think about these two alone. Just these two dramatically change peoples' lives.

I know of several people with ADD symptoms throughout their entire family, who have figured this out for themselves. Most have never had themselves or their families tested, (although they may have had teachers complain about their children) Somehow, these miraculous people have figured out, on their own, through trial and error, that daily hard exercise of at least 20-30 minutes and a high protein diet KEEPS them and their children happier!!! I do so sincerely wish I had been as observant as my children grew up, and throughout my whole life!

And yes, I know of a couple of ADD people who are vegetarians and get all their protein from vegetable sources, and they also run.
My husband "wogs" daily. He calls wogging a combination of jogging and walking. He knows for a fact that it helps him focus better. And I can tell you for a fact that the weekends when we eat high protein with a lot of salads and vegetables, we are happier. This is very tricky, because we start off every Saturday with a donut and coffee and then garage saling.... and it is all too easy to stop somewhere around lunchtime, for a burger, hot dog, or chopped beef sandwich. These kinds of stores are everywhere, on virtually every corner, and when you are hungry, all too easy to say "we eat so well throughout the week, oh lets just sin a little."
Are you like this too? Especially on the weekends? It is really hard to keep a high protein diet going when you are running kids everywhere. But for one week, it might be worth it to try and see the difference in behavior for yourself, and whomever else you think my have ADD.
Good Luck!

My Conclusion: Truth About Drug Companies

Shift the Emphasis from Me-Too to Innovative Drugs
Marcia Angell, M.D. has several conclusions, but this is the one that struck me the most. It is a whole section from pages 240 - 241. Dr. Angell has covered only pharmaceuticals. You are the patient. Since there really aren't very many innovative drugs out there, why not try natural methods that are known to work for the same problem while you wait for the pharmaceutical companies and government to create those new innovative drugs?
My inspiration for the day: Our creator made numerous natural products (herbs, supplements, and treatments) that are very effective. Our creator gave us numerous natural health care practitioners to diagnose and recommend these to us. How lucky are we?
My recipe of the day is no recipe ;-) It is a website that will make planning and cooking dinner without high fructose corn syrup! Try it! http://www.savingdinner.com/
