The Big 4

Just remember four....

4

  • holistic chiropractor
  • holistic medical doctor
  • holistic pharmacist
  • holistic acupuncturist

Get these ASAP. And while you find them, start the other big four ( Each health care practitioner will start you on them sooner or later, and probably sooner.)

4

  • arctic cod liver oil
  • magnesium
  • digestive enzymes (with and in between meals)
  • probiotics

4

Every day I give you four things to remind you of the Big 4 always.

  • blog, medical news you can use
  • joke
  • inspiration
  • recipe

Whole health 4 you! Hold up your hand and fold over your thumb. Four. You can always remember it.

The Other Big 4

Probiotics, if you have taken more than one round of antibiotics. It replaces the good flora killed off with the bad germ kill off from the antibiotics. These are your bodies natural antibiotics. Get them back in your gut. Buy the best brand you can afford, from a reliable source like a health food store you trust, or a holistic health care practitioner.

Magnesium for correct cellular responses, counterbalancing all that calcium we western society folks consume. Helps heart function dramatically and calms nerves.

Arctic Cod liver oil for heart, mental clarity, anti-inflammatory and oh so many more reasons.

Digestive Enzymes, with meals to digest meals and more importantly, in between to digest food particles lodged in weird parts of your body.

While waiting to find your holistic big 4 chiropractor, acupuncturist, medical doctor and pharmacist, do yourself a favor and get another big 4 into your life. These big four are: arctic cod liver oil, digestive enzymes, magnesium and probiotics.

What I found working at the health food store, was no matter what age, no matter what symptoms, when these four were added to a persons life, it helped them dramatically.
I have talked to several people who manage or just work at health food stores and they all have seen the exact same thing! Try it!

Magnesium and Heart Disease

I totally stole this from Linus Pauling Institute website: http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/minerals/magnesium

Ion transport across cell membranes
Magnesium is required for the active transport of
ions like potassium and calcium across cell membranes. Through its role in ion transport systems, magnesium affects the conduction of nerve impulses, muscle contraction, and normal heart rhythm (3).

Dr. Manso told me, as a patient, to build up the amount I was taking until I got a little bit of loose bowels, then cut back to the previous dose. That would be the amount of magnesium my body needs. Simple, isn't it? The right combination of magnesium, potassium, and water consumed in a day (at least half my body weight...I weigh a lot, LOL, so it's about a gallon) totally control my high blood pressure that I once had. Duh. I didn't have high blood pressure as much as I had a magnesium, potassium and water deficiency.

Are you eating and drinking a lot of calcium? You may, or may not, have a magnesium deficiency. The person to ask would be your holistic health care practitioner. Those general lab tests run every year on your body to check for minerals, will show you the MINIMUM average...that what is best for your own particular body. Just try introducing a good brand of magnesium from the health food store or your health care provider, just until you get loose stools. Cut back. Stay there a bit, say a few weeks, and see what changes there are to your life.

I, surprisingly, found that I could cut back and then cut out my anti-convulsant medication! Don't you dare do anything like this without your doctors' consultation, silly! I certainly didn't! But the effect was and still is the same... on the right amount of magnesium, the tingling in my extremities disappears, period. Isn't that amazing?

Guess what doctors put in those IV bags for bedridden pregnant women to prevent high blood pressure and potential seizures? You guessed it! magnesium! So, yes, it is very safe! In fact, this is exactly how I figured out that magnesium might work for me. I was visiting a friend in a hospital when in came a nurse with an IV bag with magnesium in it. Well, shoot, I thought, if it is good enough for a pregnant woman, it should be good enough for me. Called my neurologist..did it...it was. And yes, I had to play around with it a little from the dose to control my blood pressure, but not much. If I don't take it for about 32-48 hours, I start to feel the tingling. (all cause I forgot, like on a trip or something)

What are the negative side effects to too much magnesium? Diarrhea. Lower blood pressure. If you want to know more, one of the best sources I have found for any mineral, supplement, herb, pharmaceutical side effect is http://www.peoplesrx.com/ Click on the wellness link, and keep clicking!

Tim Russert and Heart Disease

For the record, I lowered my cholesterol with a combination of B vitamins, garlic and guggilipids. Any holistic health care practitioner is going to have a mix in one pill form, that works for them. USE IT. If you don't yet have a holistic health care practitioner, I will tell you again, to contact the pharmacists at Peoples' pharmacy in Austin, Texas and buy and have shipped to you the products they recommend...these are excellent high grade products. http://www.peoplesrx.com/ I took all my supplements on the recommendation of Dr. Dorene Witter, and Dr. Gilbert Manso...as well as Dr. Nalini Dave who I just wrote about. In fact, Dr. Dave told me that in India (where she is from) all they use to lower cholesterol is guggilipids, and not only do they work as well as statins, there are fewer to no side effects. Think about that.

The following, is a letter from a list serve I belong to, realhealth@healthiernews.com This is written by a holistic medical doctor. It will give you an idea of not only how a holistic medical doctor might think, but also, an idea of what your doctor would, could, should be looking for to prevent heart disease (arteries clogged with cholesterol). It will give you something to think about, that's for sure. Here it is:

Dear Friend,

You won't hear me say this often about anyone in mainstream media, but Tim Russert, NBC newsman and anchor of Meet the Press, was someone I respected. I took great joy in watching politicians squirm under his tough questioning. So, like most Americans, I was sad to hear the tragic news of his sudden death. After all, Russert was just 58 years old — relatively young by today's standards.

According to his doctors, he had diabetes, heart disease, and he was overweight. Yet without fail, every time I hear a news story or read an article on his death, the commentators express their surprise that something like this could happen to someone who was on blood pressure pills and cholesterol drugs, who exercised routinely (in fact, he worked out on the treadmill the morning he died), and who was on a diet. He'd even recently passed a stress test. I wish I could say I was shocked by this news. Unfortunately, stories like this one only highlight what I've been telling you all along: Blood pressure doesn't cause heart disease, high cholesterol drugs aren't cure-alls, and exercise can do more harm than good.

In short, none of the steps Russert's doctors told him to take to address his health concerns were doing a darn bit of good. Instead, if someone had told him to focus on keeping his homocysteine levels low and his magnesium levels high, we might not be having this conversation in the first place. Homocysteine makes cholesterol stick to your artery walls and can also contribute the hardening of your arteries. It's simple to control your cholesterol levels by loading up on B vitamins, like B6, B12 and folate. Magnesium also has vital heart-healthy benefits.

Statins don't protect against heart attacks. And [Russert] didn't know that the lack of one nutrient could have cost him his life," said acclaimed neurosurgeon Dr. Russell Blaylock. "The number-one cause of sudden cardiac death is magnesium deficiency. Cardiac patients and those with diabetes have the lowest magnesium levels of all."

I've written to you before about the many benefits of magnesium. This mineral

  • prevents blood clots,

  • dilates blood vessels, and can also

  • stop the development of dangerous heart irregularities.

It's why I've been such a long-time advocate of increasing magnesium intake for its heart-health benefits – not to mention what it does for your bones and bodily tissues. I've even used magnesium in emergency medicine to help limit brain damage in stroke victims. And yet more than half of Americans have a magnesium deficiency.

"People who are deficient in magnesium are most likely to have sudden cardiac arrest, and when they do arrest, they are harder to resuscitate," Blaylock says. "Many simply can't be resuscitated." Dr. Samuel Belkin, surgeon in chief of New York's Montefiore Medical Center, did a good job of summing up just why the death of the beloved newsman has so shaken both Americans in general and doctors in particular: "It makes us all feel mortal, and it also highlights the natural history of this silent killer and our limited ability to catch this killer before it strikes."

Every day Curtis and I take 400 mg of Magnesium Glycinate daily. Want to know more about magnesium? Read on in my next blog ;-)
